The number of fish a pond can accommodate depends on its actual volume, their adult size, filtration, and oxygenation. For an initial estimate, Aquiflor’s advice provides benchmarks of 250 liters per goldfish and 1,500 liters per koi carp. These values serve to prepare a project: they do not constitute a guaranteed capacity for just any pond.

A small koi purchased today can grow into a large fish. A population that seemed light at installation can also increase through reproduction. The right approach, therefore, is to plan for the years ahead and maintain a buffer before considering how many additional individuals could still be added.

Start by knowing the true volume of water

The volume indicated on a plan or a shell is not always that of the operating installation. Shelves, baskets, the fill level, and irregular shapes change the quantity of water present. If possible, retrieve the meter reading from when the pond was filled.

For a simple rectangular pond, multiply length, width, and average depth in meters. The result gives cubic meters; multiply by 1,000 to get liters. A pond measuring 3 meters by 2 meters, with an average depth of 0.7 meters, thus represents approximately 4.2 m³, or 4,200 liters.

In a multi-level pond, calculate separate zones. Using the maximum depth over the entire surface often overestimates the volume. If fish are already present, avoid draining the pond solely for measurement: instead, prepare an estimate based on the plan and accessible dimensions.

Which benchmarks to follow depending on the fish?

Envisaged population Starting benchmark What still needs to be verified
Pond goldfish, comets, shubunkins 250 liters per individual according to Aquiflor advice Adult size, group, reproduction, depth, and filtration
Koi carp 1,500 liters per individual according to Aquiflor advice Total volume suitable for large fish, swimming, filtration, and aeration
Mixed species Assessment of the entire population Needs of each species and total load

A ratio per individual does not alone define the minimum size of a habitat. Reserving 1,500 liters for one koi does not mean that a tank of this volume makes for a satisfactory koi pond. The shape, depth, and space available for a group must be studied together.

For goldfish, the Association Française du Poisson Rouge recommends starting with a pond of at least 2,000 liters for a typical project. Recommendations vary according to the setup and the fish; this diversity shows the value of having the entire system validated rather than simply choosing the most generous ratio.

Count future size, not just individuals

Six young fish and six adults do not represent the same load for the pond. A 15-centimeter koi seems unobtrusive at purchase; its growth then changes the needs for food, oxygen, and waste treatment. The number may remain the same while maintenance becomes much more demanding.

Draw up a simple inventory: species, number, approximate size, and arrival date. A short video taken during feeding helps to count without capturing the fish. Note any visible fry and individuals whose species remains uncertain. This list will be more useful to an advisor than a photograph showing only the surface of the pond.

Do not assume that fish will stay small because their environment is small. A sustainable project plans for space adapted to their development. For a pond that is still empty, choose the species before choosing the number.

Filtration sets another limit

Mechanical filtration collects part of the solid matter. Biological filtration hosts the microorganisms that transform nitrogenous waste. Increasing the population and the food distributed increases the workload required of the installation. The water volume remains important, but it does not describe this entire load.

Read manufacturer capacities within their context: the same equipment can display several volumes depending on whether fish or koi are present. Also look at the actual flow rate, clogging, and maintenance organization. A commercial mention in liters is not enough to authorize a specific population.

Increasingly frequent cleaning, a flow rate that drops quickly, or unstable analysis results are signs to review the load and the installation. Adding a product does not correct a clogged filter intake or insufficient biological media.

Oxygen becomes decisive when the water warms up

Fish, bacteria, and other organisms breathe. Warm water holds less oxygen than cold water, and plants also breathe during the night. A satisfactory situation during the day in spring, therefore, does not guarantee the same during a warm night in summer.

Observe the fish at different times, check the operation of the aeration, and identify areas where water circulates poorly. A large surface area for gas exchange, an appropriate depth, and consistent water movement contribute to the overall operation. Two ponds of the same volume can react differently to high heat.

If fish are breathing with difficulty at the surface, do not consider this behavior as a simple index for calculating density. Check the water and equipment quickly, reinforce the appropriate aeration, and seek expert advice. An emergency is not resolved by a new purchase of fish or by waiting a few days.

Three examples for practical reasoning

A 1,000-liter pond and a desire for koi

The project lacks the volume to sustainably accommodate large koi. The small size of the fish offered for sale does not solve this difficulty. Study a larger pond or a different orientation for the water garden before purchasing.

A 3,000-liter pond already populated with goldfish

The calculation of 3,000 divided by 250 gives twelve, but this result is not a target to reach. First count the fish present, including the young, then check their growth, water measurements, and filter capacities. If the group is reproducing, keeping a margin is particularly useful.

A 10,000-liter pond with several large koi

Before adding an individual, document the size of the fish, the amount of food, and the filtration. An apparently clean pond may already be demanding a lot from its installation. The right choice may be to keep the current population and improve monitoring.

Analyses that help in making a decision

Water transparency does not indicate ammonia or nitrite levels. To monitor a population, choose tests corresponding to the desired parameters and follow their protocol. Keep the results along with the temperature, date, and interventions performed.

The JBL Pro Aquatest Combiset Pond offered on Aquishop notably includes tests for pH, KH, GH, ammonium, nitrites, and phosphates. It does not replace a dissolved oxygen test. Check the exact contents of the kit before choosing the necessary supplements.

When starting or restarting a filter, Aquipond NitriBoost can be considered according to its instructions. Its role is to support biological filtration; it does not create extra room or authorize a rapid increase in the population.

Add gradually and plan for reproduction

Before an introduction, take stock of the health and origin of the fish, the appropriate quarantine precautions, and the stability of the installation. Avoid combining a major cleaning, a filter modification, and several new arrivals in one day: it would become difficult to understand a change in behavior or parameters.

When many young fish appear, anticipate their future care. Seek a solution through a specialist or an equipped owner, while taking into account the health of the animals. Do not release ornamental fish into a natural environment.

Before your next purchase, prepare five pieces of information: actual volume, dimensions, fish inventory, filter reference, and the latest analyses. With this file, the Aquishop team will be able to help you evaluate a reasonable population. A pond that maintains a margin offers more flexibility during hot weather, fish growth, and periods when maintenance falls behind.
