Frost and winter solutions for a pond

In winter, the main risk for pond fish is not the cold itself, but a solid layer of ice, which prevents gas exchange at the surface. Maintaining an opening in the ice and keeping the water oxygenated is therefore the priority.

• Maintain an opening: Oase IceFree Thermo heaters, Superfish Pond Heaters, Pontec PondoPolar insulating bells, or IceFree 4 Seasons.
• Oxygenate: Oase AquaOxy kits or Secoh air pump kits, chosen according to the pond volume (from 1 to 120 m³). Place the air stones at mid-depth so as not to stir up the warmer water at the bottom.
• Monitor: a floating thermometer indicates when to reduce and then stop feeding.

Never break the ice by hitting it: the shock waves stress the fish.
