Illustration d’un bassin de jardin avec une formation partielle de glace en hiver

A net, an air pump, an anti-freeze device: the list of winter accessories can quickly grow. However, not all ponds require the same equipment. The choice depends on the presence of fish, the depth, the amount of fallen leaves, and how the filtration circuit handles cold periods.

Before buying, identify the function missing from your installation. Retaining leaves, promoting gas exchange, keeping an opening in the ice, and protecting a filter are different needs. This guide helps you prioritize them and compare some references available on Aquishop.

Taking inventory of what is already installed

Note the estimated volume, maximum depth, population, and device references. Add a sketch of the pipes: which ones are buried, exposed, placed in an indoor area, or connected to a waterfall? This overview often reveals the most vulnerable points.

Then, gather the manuals. A motor advertised as frost-resistant does not make the entire circuit immune to cold. A fitting, a UV clarifier, or a filter housing may remain vulnerable. OASE specifically reminds us that frozen water in pipes and devices can damage them.

Also plan for access: a skimmer basket or a floating device that is difficult to reach in autumn will be even more so when the bank is slippery. The ability to check and maintain the equipment is part of the decision.

The leaf net: useful when input is significant

If several trees overlook the pond, a net can reduce daily cleanup. Measure the length and width to be covered, then the necessary margins for attachments. Check where to place the anchors without damaging the liner or the pipes.

The OASE Aquanet 1 is a 3 × 4 m net delivered with stakes. The format must match the area actually covered and the chosen tensioning method. The pond's dimensions alone are not always enough.

A net weighed down by leaves will eventually sag. Inspect it after windy weather, remove accumulations, and check that no animals are trapped. It is used to limit new debris; it does not remove what is already at the bottom.

The skimmer: intercepting waste while the circuit is running

A skimmer draws water from the surface and traps some debris in its basket. It can be beneficial during leaf fall, provided it is properly sized, accessible, and maintained. A full basket or an unsuitable water level limits its efficiency.

The OASE SwimSkim 25 is an example of a floating skimmer. The product sheet indicates a surface area of up to 25 m² and a minimum depth of 40 cm. These benchmarks are supplemented by observing winds, accumulation zones, and the amount of leaves.

Before the frosts, consult its manual to know when to remove or stop it. A surface cleaning device is not automatically designed as an anti-freeze device. Also check the condition of the cable and the space left around the float.

The air pump: aeration adapted for winter

An air pump supplies diffusers. It promotes gas exchange and water movement, but does not heat the pond. Its efficiency depends on the actual flow provided, the depth, the pipes, and the diffusers.

The AquaOxy 1000 has two outlets and an advertised maximum flow of 1,000 liters of air per hour. To choose this type of equipment, take into account the population and the complete installation rather than just a volume mention on the packaging.

Check the pipes and diffusers before winter. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for positioning and use in cold weather. In a deep pond, placement should not be improvised: excessive churning of the area where fish hibernate may be undesirable.

A stirred area can help delay ice formation, but this result depends on conditions. If maintaining an opening is necessary, verify that the chosen device covers this use.

Anti-freeze via circulation or heating element: two principles

IceFree 4 Seasons: circulating water without heating

The IceFree 4 Seasons uses a small pump to maintain a local ice-free zone. The product sheet claims a power consumption of 5 W and a minimum depth of 80 cm. This criterion must be checked at the location where the device will be installed.

This is not general heating. Its operation relies on water circulation according to a precise setup. Therefore, respect the winter configuration in the manual; the setup used as a water feature in summer does not automatically carry over.

IceFree Thermo 330: maintaining an opening via local heating

The IceFree Thermo 330 uses a heating element and integrates a frost controller. Its product sheet presents it as a way to maintain an opening around the float, especially when the frost lasts. The control function adapts its activation based on the risk of frost.

A local heating device maintains an opening; it does not regulate the temperature of the entire pond.

Check the distances, immersion level, and conditions of use in the manual. Even if a device is suitable for shallower water, it does not make every small container suitable for overwintering fish.

Equipment Main Function Point to check before buying
Leaf net Intercept leaves Dimensions, tension, fasteners, and wildlife control
Skimmer Collect surface waste Usable surface, water level, basket, and wintering conditions
Air pump Aerate Flow rate at expected depth and diffuser placement
IceFree 4 Seasons Maintain opening via circulation Minimum depth of 80 cm and winter setup
IceFree Thermo 330 Maintain opening via local heating Positioning, power supply, and controller operation

The filter and UV: deciding with the circuit manuals

A system designed to operate all winter may require specific protection and monitoring. Conversely, some devices must be drained and stored in a frost-free area. There is no single instruction applicable to all installations.

Photograph the fittings before dismantling and label the parts. Provide a suitable storage area, then follow the cleaning and preservation instructions. Do not leave a stopped device filled with water in a place exposed to frost.

If you keep the filtration running, examine the return to the pond and the risks of diversion due to ice. After a cold spell, check the level and flow rate. The usual noise of a pump is not enough to prove that all the water is returning to the right place.

Before the cold: also addressing the issue of deposits

Anti-freeze equipment does not erase an accumulation of waste. If intervention is necessary, organize it before conditions make the work difficult. A localized suction with the PondoVac 4 or PondoVac 5 can remove accessible deposits in an ornamental pond.

For the organic fraction of the sediments, Aquipond Bactovase can be integrated into a suitable autumn program. Check the manual, water conditions, and the planned schedule. Its biological action differs from mechanical extraction and does not concern sand or mineral soil.

On a natural pond, adapt the intervention to the wildlife and keep quiet areas. Not all bottoms should be cleaned in the same way.

Comparing consumption without forgetting the service provided

Electrical power alone does not describe a device's usefulness. A small pump and a heating element serve different functions. Compare their suitability to the pond first, then the expected operating time.

For a device running continuously, the calculation is simple: power in watts × duration in hours ÷ 1,000 = consumption in kilowatt-hours. For example, a constant power of 5 W for 24 hours represents 0.12 kWh. Then multiply by the price per kilowatt-hour of your contract.

For an automatically controlled device, the actual consumption depends on the activation time. Do not systematically multiply its maximum power by the entire season to announce a fixed cost.

The final check before the first frosts

  • The references and manuals for all devices are accessible.
  • The cables and connections are in good condition, installed according to outdoor guidelines.
  • Items to be drained or brought inside are identified.
  • Pipes and water returns remain controllable from a stable bank.
  • Any anti-freeze device is suitable for the available depth.
  • Someone can check the pond during an absence.

Do not break the ice by hitting it to reach a device. The RHS advises against shocks transmitted to the fish. Anticipate the installation and keep regular watch: the equipment must remain accessible and its operation visible.

Choosing based on your pond

Measure the depth first and check the existing circuit. Then compare the solutions for maintaining an opening, without confusing aeration, circulation, and local heating.
