Pruning your aquatic plants in autumn and winter 🍁❄️

🍂 In autumn, it is essential to prune aquatic plants before they decompose in the pond, disrupting the water's balance 🌊. The 2-in-1 FlexiCut helps you complete this task quickly and neatly.

Even in winter, it remains essential ❄️! Some plants require pruning even in cold weather 🧣 to encourage regrowth in the spring 🌱. With its long handle (158 cm) 📏, the FlexiCut allows you to easily reach difficult areas, such as the center of the pond.

Practical accessories 🛠️

The FlexiCut is also customizable! You can purchase an additional shear head (ref. 51272) for even more precision 🔍 and comfort. Adapted to all your needs, this tool quickly becomes indispensable.

How to know what to prune around the pond?

Before you get the shears out, take a walk around the pond. A leaf lying in the water, a still-green clump, and a dry stem that remains upright do not require the same intervention. The goal is to remove vegetation that risks decomposing in the water, while keeping the useful parts of the plant and the refuges for small wildlife. A pond prepared for winter therefore does not need to be completely shaved down.

Start with damaged water lily leaves and already drooping stems. Then, observe the marginal plants: some naturally lose their foliage, while others remain decorative or maintain some of their activity. If you are unsure about a species, take a picture of the entire plant and its base before asking for advice. Proper identification is better than systematic pruning done at the wrong time.

The schedule also depends on your garden. A pond sheltered in a courtyard does not cool down like a pond exposed to the wind. It is more useful to look at the state of the vegetation and the conditions of the day rather than setting a universal date. Avoid working from a frozen, unstable, or slippery bank; postpone the intervention if you cannot maintain secure footing.

A simple working method, from the edge to the water

  1. Prepare a disposal area. Set up a container within reach for plant waste. You will avoid repeated trips with the tool and dropping cut pieces into the pond.
  2. Locate the stem precisely. Follow it with your eyes to the area you want to cut. Do not plunge a blade blindly into a dense clump where a pipe, cable, or the edge of a basket might be hiding.
  3. Approach the head without forcing. Adjust your position on the bank. If you have to lean excessively, the area is too far to work comfortably from that spot.
  4. Cut a small amount at a time. Targeted cutting allows you to see what you are doing and remove the plant neatly. Pulling on a handful of stems can move the basket or tear off healthy parts.
  5. Remove the waste and check the results. Pick up any remaining fragments with a suitable pond net. See if the water circulation is clear and if the remaining plants are still well-positioned.

Work in sections rather than trying to finish everything in one sitting. This organization is particularly useful in a dense pond: you maintain better visibility, you limit fatigue, and you can stop the intervention without leaving a large amount of cut vegetation in the water.

What the FlexiCut brings to the table

The OASE 2-in-1 FlexiCut combines cutting with holding the cut plant material. This is its main advantage when the plant is difficult to reach: you aim to retrieve the stem at the moment you cut it. OASE indicates a fixed handle of 158 cm and a head whose working angle can be adjusted. The total length of the tool is distinct from that of the handle.

This reach does not mean you can reach the center of any pond. The height of the bank, your position, and the necessary angle reduce the truly comfortable distance. Measure from where your feet can remain stable to the targeted plant. For a large body of water, it is better to plan for multiple access points rather than relying solely on a long handle.

The adjustable head helps in choosing a cutting angle, but it does not make the liner invulnerable. Always keep the blades at a distance from the membrane and fittings. Do not use the tool to probe the bottom, lift a stone, or pry. If you cannot clearly see the work area, stop before cutting.

Should all plants be pruned before winter?

No. Removing parts that rot in the water and removing all vegetation are two different decisions. Dry stems that are still sturdy can maintain landscape interest and serve as shelter. In beds around the pond, selective pruning allows you to maintain certain winter silhouettes, as recommended by the Royal Horticultural Society for perennials.

For aquatic plants, check the needs of each species. A well-established hardy plant, a tropical plant to be brought indoors, and a clump that has become too invasive are not handled the same way. Pruning is not a substitute for winter protection for a fragile species, nor for dividing a saturated basket, nor for botanical identification when the plant is unknown.

Conversely, letting all dead leaves fall into the pond increases the amount of material to be removed later. The right compromise consists of intervening regularly, through small operations, without turning every maintenance session into a major cleanup. You can supplement your equipment with aquatic plant accessories, choosing only those that meet an identified task.

Adapting the autumn calendar to what you observe

The Velda pond calendar notably suggests removing the last dead leaves from aquatic plants in November. This reference serves as a guide for scheduling an inspection, not as a mandatory cutoff date for all species. Look at the actual state of the foliage and the function of each area of the pond before bringing out the tool.

A short, regular tour allows you to spot accessible debris without turning each visit into a general pruning session. For an ornamental pond, the practical goal is to remove what is degrading in the water while keeping the parts you have chosen to preserve for their winter interest.

Maintaining the tool and replacing the right part

After use, remove debris stuck in the head, clean the tool according to its manual, and let it dry before storage. Take the opportunity to check the condition of the blades and moving parts. If cutting becomes difficult, it could be due to clogging, a worn part, or overly resistant vegetation; forcing it further is not a fix.

OASE lists the 51272 replacement head for the 2-in-1 FlexiCut. Before ordering, verify the reference of your tool. A visually similar part is not necessarily compatible. The Aquishop product page helps you find the right item; if there is uncertainty about the fit, send a photo of your current head to the team before purchasing.

Questions to ask before ordering

  • What do you want to cut? Tender stems accessible from the bank do not pose the same problem as a large, woody clump.
  • Can you retrieve the waste? The "hold-while-cutting" feature is useful, but a net remains practical for fragments already floating.
  • Do you have stable access? A longer tool does not compensate for a dangerous edge.
  • Do you already have a compatible tool? A replacement head may suffice when the rest is in good condition.

For tailored advice, prepare an overall photo, a close-up of the plants to be pruned, and the approximate distance from the bank. These three pieces of information allow Aquishop to guide you toward equipment consistent with your pond, rather than a purchase based solely on the handle length.
