If the filter material was already in use, the time for a \"recolonisation\" will be doubled, because this does not occur so easily on a dead bacterial mat. The addition of concentrated cleaning bacteria as in the JBL FilterStart reduces the biological running-in period to around 24 hours. Another reason for this addition is to occupy the colonisation space with these beneficial bacteria so that any pathogens have nowhere to spread.
